2018 Music PEI Awards Announcement
Music PEI is very excited to announce the return of Music PEI Week which also means the retirement of the May Run Music Festival. After receiving feedback from members and our Artist Advisory Committee, the Music PEI Board of Directors has elected to move back to our roots and present the Music PEI Awards in January of 2018.
The Prince Edward Island music awards celebration initially began in November of 2001 and in 2009 moved to January. It proved a good move as the community support for an event in January was excellent. The artists prefer it as January is generally a slow month when many of the touring artists are home.
Music PEI Week will take place January 25th, to the 28th in 2018 and will include the fan favorite Songwriter of the Year Concert, along with the multi-cultural concert Music Mosaic, genre-specific showcases for rock, pop, dance, folk, jazz and more. The week will close with the Music PEI Awards Party Sunday afternoon and a closing concert Sunday night, the 28th, featuring many of the top nominees. It continues to be the largest annual celebration of Prince Edward Island’s music.
The Canadian Song Conference will continue to be held in May focusing on education and business development.
New changes for the awards include the addition of Song of the Year which acknowledges the Artist/Group and the Producer in any genre.
The Electronic Recording of the Year will recognize artists that employ electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology at the root of its production. Recordings can utilize acoustic instruments as part of the production, but the structure must be defined by electronic elements. Musical genres and respective subgenres such as (but not limited to) techno, house, electro, trance, drum’n’bass, dubstep, grime, electro-acoustic, turntablism, sample-based music, ambient, and downtempo are eligible for this category.
