Music PEI is excited to announce the selected performers for this year’s Artist Exchange Program as part of Showcase PEI. Catherine MacLellan from PEI and Sam Carter from England will be participating in a collaborative partnership between Music PEI and the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) presenting the Maritimes to England Tour. In mid-September EFDSS Associate Artist Sam Carter will travel to PEI to collaborate on songwriting with Catherine MacLellan that will later be performed during Showcase PEI 2012.

Music PEI’s Showcase PEI conference brings together buyers and industry professionals from the international music community to enjoy performances by Prince Edward Island’s top exporting and export ready artists. This year is the fifth annual event, taking place September 23 – 25, and has generated approximately a half a million dollars in work for Island artists since 2008.

Maritimes to England Tour will kick off at The Harmony House on September 23rd, and then Sam and Catherine will hit the road on an East Coast Tour, wowing crowds at The Carleton in Halifax, Cedar Tree Cafe in Fredericton, and The Empress in Moncton.

The Artist Exchange will be reciprocated in October 2013, when Catherine joins Sam on a tour of England that will include a showcase performance at the English Folk Expo 2013 (EFEx) at The Met in Bury.

This collaboration is a huge opportunity for the artists as they will both gain exposure to new audiences, and be able to take advantage of the others career development. Music PEI is honored to be partnered with the internationally renowned society, EDFSS, as their deep roots in their tradition truly enrich the context of this experience.

Sam won Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards in 2010 and is a former Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre. His new album The No Testament was released on August 20.

Catherine voted ‘Critics Favourite New Discovery’ by Penguin Eggs Magazine in 2008, is a renowned artist in her home country of Canada. A winner of Solo Artist of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards, she has also picked up eleven Music PEI awards and won Female Solo Recording of the Year and the Folk Music Recording of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards in 2010.
