The City of Charlottetown, Music PEI and CBC are very proud to announce “Just Biding My Time: A Tribute to Gene MacLellan”, a televised CBC Concert and also the closing event of the 2011 Cultural Capital of Canada designation for Charlottetown.
“The City of Charlottetown is pleased to support this tribute, years in the making, to such a talented Island icon,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “This farewell event will be a fantastic way to end an exciting year of cultural celebrations in the Capital. The entire community has been enriched and is left a more special place because of this cultural designation.”
The concert will celebrate the life and music of folk singer Gene MacLellan and will be held January 14, 2012 at the stunning Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown.
“Gene MacLellan was a songwriter who experienced tremendous success and wrote from the heart,” says Music PEI Executive Director Rob Oakie. “Islanders are very proud Gene chose to call PEI home and this concert, which has been three years in the planning, is a unique celebration of his songwriting by some of the East Coast’s most loved artists.”
This public show will feature performances from the daughter of the late MacLellan, singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan, as well as acclaimed performers Lennie Gallant, Ron Hynes, folk-rock band Haunted Hearts, Meaghan Blanchard and more.
“Gene MacLellan’s music continues to inspire many of our talented Island artists and is enjoyed worldwide,” says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson. “This event is a fitting way to celebrate his music and our province’s cultural heritage and artistic talents.”
